Origin and Region
Bugisu (also spelled Bugishu/Sipi/Mount Elgon) is a high-altitude Arabica region located on the volcanic slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda. Bugisu coffees are grown primarily by smallholder farmers and cooperatives, mostly from the foothills of Mount Elgon (around Kapchorwa/Mbale).
What Does “AA” Mean? (Size and Quality)
In Uganda’s grading system, “AA” refers to both bean size and low defect rate: typically, over 90% of the beans pass through a size 17+ screen (≈ ≥6.75 mm) and are considered to have a low defect tolerance, ensuring uniformity and stable roasting performance.
Growing Altitude and Climate
Bugisu varieties are typically grown at altitudes between 1,400–2,300 meters (some sources note 1,200–2,200 m / even above 2,200 m). Volcanic soil, cool day/night temperature variations, and consistent rainfall contribute to flavor development.
Commonly Reported Flavor Notes for Bugisu AA
(may vary slightly depending on the source)Fruity/winey (grape, raisin, winey), with aromas reminiscent of black tea or rooibos. Notes of dried fruit, cherry, plum/peach, and occasionally orange peel/citrus contrast. Chocolate, brown sugar, cocoa, and nutty undertones; body is generally medium to full, acidity medium to mild.
Quality / Scoring Range
Commercial Bugisu AA lots are typically listed in the 80–85+ cup score range; some micro-lots (depending on source) can reach even higher scores. This explains the continued demand for Bugisu in the specialty segment.
